honest review ;
the show touched so many trigger points. (The Other Black Girl via Hulu)
all skin folk ain’t kin folk
black women being in rooms to shift change but closing doors instead of opening them
code switching to “blend in”
can we talk about how draining a job can be when you have to also be an unpaid actress ..
the disheartening part is nothing has changed ..
and as a black women you see it in the simple change in mannerisms and attention
when you wear your natural hair vs. “growing hair over night” to work ..
somehow the struggle of being black always makes for good tv and production but never for actual concrete change .. and I hate that for us wholeheartedly.
any room you can not show up as your full self is definitely not a room big enough to accommodate you.
while there is a time and place for everything because majority of us were brought up to be seen and not heard within our culture .. there’s also a time and place to get the respect you deserve.
the internet discourse even shows me how quickly black women pick other black women apart for views and likes bc God forbid we don’t fit ideal images .. images that are fictious .. wear our hair straight even if it’s not from our roots, enhance our beauty with makeup, be sexy but not provocative, take care of your hair but don’t wear them bonnets in daylight that’s ghetto, don’t wear flats or sneakers for an occasion that’s not feminine or lady like ..
the only one who gives us the most SHXT about these insignificant, very much irrelevant factors to surviving this already challenging world are black women and men , we are truly our worst enemies .. we have became the exact reflection of what hating us for being human with extra melanin looks like.
My favorite black women are the unapologetic ones because I know how hard society pushes us to be a “niche” of what a “perfect” black women should look like instead of being beautifully rough around the edges ..
how you telling ppl to add seasoning but subtracting your own .. ?
haven’t rambled on here in a while but that show definitely had my thoughts firing, watch it and let me know your thoughts.
